Title

Map of downtown Buffalo and vicinity showing abandoned canals and slips

Description

When the Erie Canal opened in 1825, Buffalo quickly became the 8th-largest city in the U.S. As the railroad industry grew, the Canal's usefulness was surpassed by the efficiency of steam-powered trains. By the early 20th century, local waterways in the area now known as Canalside sat unused, relics of the hotbed of commercial activity and bustling tourism once conducted on the Erie Canal.
