Circular to the Collectors of the Customs, June 8, 1792

Manuscript of a Treasury Report composed by Hamilton on June 8, 1792 intended for Customs Collectors. In 1792, Customs officers were the primary revenue collectors for the U.S. Treasury Department. They managed import duties (tariffs), which were the new federal government's main source of income, and oversaw maritime operations like the newly formed Revenue Cutter Service (the precursor to the U.S. Coast Guard).
