Two selected stories from The Fables of Aesop. Illustrated by Thomas Bewick [1759-1828], the lauded naturalist illustrator, this 1818 edition of The Fables of Aesop is specially bound with a title page and 50 plates from an earlier 1793 London edition. Bewick's intricate wood engravings show his great skill and his love for the subjects. In fact, he illustrated various editions Aesop’s fables in his career.

An account of the resource
Victorian era children’s book illustrator Walter Crane entertains young readers with silly illustrations and verse in his Absurd ABC.
Edward F. Ellis worked at the Buffalo Public Library at one time and, as collector, he amassed a vast collection of ABC books over the years. When he died in 1983, approximately 434 ABC books were books donated to the public library. Since 1984, the Ellis ABC Collection has grown to more than 700 American and International books from 1793 to the present.

Mother Hubbard, re-issued by John Lane Company in 1913, was written and illustrated by Walter Crane [1845-1915]. His version of this nursery rhyme was first published in 1873. Description

William W. Denslow [1856-1915] illustrated his 1903 Jack and the Bean-stalk in his uniquely charming style that anyone familiar with the 1900 edition of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz will recognize. Denslow created illustrations for newspapers, magazines, posters and some books before becoming the first artist engaged by Elbert Hubbard at the Roycroft in East Aurora in the late 1890s.

The Story of Fortunata, is a selection from A Fairy Garland. This signed, limited edition of A Fairy Garland; Being Fairy Tales from the Old French that is illustrated by Edmund Dulac [1882-1953] and was published in 1928 was gifted to the Buffalo & Erie County Library by Dr. and Mrs. Robert Warner. Dulac’s dreamy, painterly, 12 color plates grace the eight fairy tales the book contains by Charles Perrault, Mme. d’Aulnoy and Count Anthony Hamilton.

An account of the resource
American artist and cartoonist John Barton Gruelle was the creator of Raggedy Ann and Raggedy Andy.
Edward F. Ellis worked at the Buffalo Public Library at one time and, as collector, he amassed a vast collection of ABC books over the years. When he died in 1983, approximately 434 ABC books were books donated to the public library. Since 1984, the Ellis ABC Collection has grown to more than 700 American and International books from 1793 to the present.
