This project was part of activities happening across Erie County throughout 2026 to celebrate 250 years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence. With its proximity to the vital resource of the Great Lakes, the region we call Western New York has long been home to vibrant and diverse communities, both before and after the pivotal events of this country’s founding. This quilt project aimed to visually reflect the unique cultural and familial histories of communities in this region throughout its history.

Residents of Western New York were invited to make and submit a 9 inch by 9 inch fabric square (sewn or constructed using glue) responding to the question “Who are ‘we the people?’” A quilt of these unique fabric squares was be sewn together in August 2026.

1. What does your square represent? "WNY is a paradise of gardens. I choose recycled scraps from stitch buffalo to create a garden theme. All fabrics cotton. I chose paper flowers for 3D look."

2. Why did you choose these symbols? "I love gardens after having to live in Los Angeles for 20 years in an apartment, I finally have a home and a garden. The Open gardens and gardening community gave me such a warm welcome when I moved here in Nov. 2020 my garden has gifted plants from many kind gardeners."

3. What do you hope viewers notice or feel? "I hope to convey the love and joy that comes with gardening. I sow many seeds every year and gardening is a labor of love. My garden is a happy place to be and it welcomes birds, bees and butterflies."</text>

1. What does your square represent? "My square represents the conflict that I feel when I think about our country. Theres so much beauty - in the people, the land, the cultures - but so much of that is overshadowed by the horrors of our past and our present. I wanted the fabrics to match but convey very different feelings - the beautiful and horrible coexist everywhere here."

2. Why did you choose these symbols? The flag is the most obvious symbol of the United States, but for me personally I have not felt proud seeing that flag for many, many years. It is impossible for me to look at the American flag and not be reminded of 250 years of cruelty. But, of course, there's also been 250 years of beauty, and joy, and celebration and of so many people actiively working against that cruelty. The bright part is celebrated by the color and the flowers surrounding the flag. "

3. What do you hope viewers notice or feel? "I hope viewers feel jarred by the shadow interrupting the scene and can sense the conflict inherent in the image."</text>

My start in life and my forever home.
2. Why did you choose these symbols? I have been a quilter for approximately 48 years. I've sewed 32 quilts; some as gifts, for use, for decoration, finished quilts for others, sewed for the sheer creativity of it, and sometimes to master a new skill or pattern. In speaking with the Grosvenor Room staff, I said I wasn't sure I could create a block to fit the specific theme. Yet having made so many quilts, there were a few blocks I hadn't used for one reason or another. In the quilting community these blocks are called "orphan blocks." The suggestion was made that I could just donate one of those. Orphan blocks are not useless or unloved they just don't fit in the plan right then and there. Then it came to me. I was born in Buffalo at the now defunct Booth Memorial Hospital and Home. The facility was often referred to as a home for unwed mothers. After my birth I was temporarily placed with a foster family until, 8 weeks later, I was placed with my adoptive family - in my forever home.
3. What do you hope viewers notice or feel? My block started out as an orphan, as did I, and now it has a forever home within this project.</text>

Background fabric- snow. Bright colored fabric for the people to represent the energy and resilience of people during the storm.
2. Why did you choose these symbols? During the Blizzard 77' I was a college freshman. My mother at the time was a nurse at Buffalo General Hospital. She was at the hospital when the storm struck. She spent the duration of the storm at the hospital caring for her patients. I remember taking the sled to the grocery store to get groceries for ourselves and the neighbors, carrying the groceries home on our sled.
3. What do you hope viewers notice or feel? Connections of people during the storm and its aftermath. Resilience of people in adversity.</text>
