This project was part of activities happening across Erie County throughout 2026 to celebrate 250 years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence. With its proximity to the vital resource of the Great Lakes, the region we call Western New York has long been home to vibrant and diverse communities, both before and after the pivotal events of this country’s founding. This quilt project aimed to visually reflect the unique cultural and familial histories of communities in this region throughout its history. Residents of Western New York were invited to make and submit a 9 inch by 9 inch fabric square (sewn or constructed using glue) responding to the question “Who are ‘we the people?’” A quilt of these unique fabric squares was be sewn together in August 2026. This form of propaganda, or “selling the war,” was used by both the Allies and the Central Powers to spark patriotism, raise funds and resources and foster hatred of the enemy. George’s name is synonymous with this iconic, historic organization in Buffalo’s Michigan Street African American Heritage Corridor. George was a teen when he visited the Club for the first time and fell in love with jazz. He is a virtual encyclopedia, who is knowledgeable about Buffalo’s historic musicians, their national contemporaries, and the history of the Colored Musician’s Union and club. Denied access to unions of white musicians, Buffalo’s Black musicians created their own union, Local 533 in 1917. They purchased the building that houses The Club in 1935. George is an instrumental leader in the movement to preserve the historic musical treasures of Buffalo’s early Black community. A new museum and renovated club will open soon in the original location. George is the Chairman of the Michigan Street African American Heritage Corridor Commission and a board member of the Michigan Street Preservation Corporation.
