George’s name is synonymous with this iconic, historic organization in Buffalo’s Michigan Street African American Heritage Corridor. George was a teen when he visited the Club for the first time and fell in love with jazz. He is a virtual encyclopedia, who is knowledgeable about Buffalo’s historic musicians, their national contemporaries, and the history of the Colored Musician’s Union and club. Denied access to unions of white musicians, Buffalo’s Black musicians created their own union, Local 533 in 1917. They purchased the building that houses The Club in 1935. George is an instrumental leader in the movement to preserve the historic musical treasures of Buffalo’s early Black community. A new museum and renovated club will open soon in the original location. George is the Chairman of the Michigan Street African American Heritage Corridor Commission and a board member of the Michigan Street Preservation Corporation. These programs are a representative sample of the entertainment available to Buffalo audiences from 1816 to 1951, and include local talent as well as internationally renowned performers. The featured items are from the following two collections: Theater Programs, 1816 - current Programs, playbills, and cast lists from theatrical venues in Buffalo, NY and vicinity. The bulk of the collection is from 1890 to 1950 and includes drama, comedy, vaudeville, minstrel, and musical theater productions held at more than 70 theaters.
