Title A name given to the resource Buffalo Public School Buildings, 1908 Description An account of the resource This collection consists of photographs of Buffalo Public School buildings taken in March 1908. These 83 black & white platinum prints were originally mounted on black pages in an album. While the album is no longer intact, information noted on the photographs reveals they were produced for a building survey for the Buffalo Common Council. The Deputy Building Commissioner of the Department of Public Works wrote a report on the condition of the school buildings and submitted it to the Common Council in 1908. The report paid particular attention to doors and fire escapes, and recommended safety improvements. Many of the photographs show the back or sides of the schools in order to document the fire escape(s). “Condemned” is written on some of the photos, but this may have been added at a later time. While the majority of the buildings documented here no longer exist today, most were still in use for many years after the photographs were taken. In 1908, the Buffalo Public School System consisted of 62 primary schools, 3 high schools, and one public teacher’s college. Nine of the primary schools are no longer in this collection, lost before the photographs were acquired by the B&ECPL. Many of the buildings in use in 1908 were erected between 1880 and 1900, a period of heavy construction when student enrollment almost doubled. Often the schools pictured are actually the second or third building to serve the neighborhood. The school system was organized in 1838, and the original buildings were small wood schoolhouses. As Buffalo’s population grew with the annexation of Black Rock in 1853, and the influx of immigrants in the second half of the 19th century, there was a need for larger schools, and more districts to handle the increase in students. As most of the buildings in these photographs no longer exist, this collection is a snapshot of educational architecture in the early 20th century. And while the schools are the main subjects of each photo, we also see a glimpse of life in 1908 Buffalo -- neighborhood shops, unpaved and brick roads, trolley car lines, early automobiles, and horse-drawn wagons. Some students took the opportunity to have their picture taken, and are lined up outside for the photographer. Others can be spotted peering out of the windows, curious faces against the glass. Some of the primary schools were designed by the architectural firm of Louise Bethune, the first professional female architect in the United States. She and/or her husband, Robert A. Bethune, designed six of the schools in the collection. Other notable architects of these schools include Esenwein & Johnson, M.E. Beebe & Son, and Charles D. Swan. Mr. Newberg retired from the Buffalo CBS network affiliate at the end of 2015, after serving the station for thirty-seven years in various roles including main anchor, reporter and documentarian. Title A name given to the resource Mayor Anthony Masiello: Reflections Creator An entity primarily responsible for making the resource Newberg, Rich Description An account of the resource Anthony Masiello first made a name for himself as a star basketball player for the Canisius College Golden Griffins. His first shot in politics at age twenty-four netted him a seat on Buffalo's Common Council in 1971. He worked his way up to Majority Leader in 1976. After spending ten years on the Council, Masiello was elected to the New York State Senate. Serving from 1981 to 1993, he advanced to the positions of Minority Whip and Chair of the Democratic Conference. On January 1, 1994, Masiello was sworn in as Buffalo 61st mayor. He served three terms. In an interview with WIVB-TV Senior Correspondent Rich Newberg, Masiello looked back with pride on his accomplishments as mayor. He said his administration boosted Buffalo's image nationally by building up the city's medical corridor and changing Buffalo's "economic fabric." In particular, he mentioned cultural tourism and the attraction of the city's developing Inner Harbor. He also said developers were converting old historic buildings into attractive places to live, providing an incentive for people to rent or buy property downtown. During the Masiello years, eighty year old school buildings were renovated with state-of-the-art "learning laboratories." It was a ten year, state funded, billion dollar project. Masiello said, when it came to education, his one regret was that he was unable to appoint three members to the Buffalo School Board. Directly addressed the people of Buffalo, Masiello said, "I thoroughly enjoyed being your mayor." He added, "I know we've had some tough times but I never gave up on our city. I never gave up on its people, and I never gave up on its future." Because of his positive approach to governing, he said, "I think we're in a really good position to do great things as a city and as a people." Tony Masiello won twenty-three elections to public office during the span of his political career. The C-130 cargo crews took Part in a drug interdiction operation, as well as providing aid to an orphanage and helping to build a school. The mission took place about three years after U.S. forces invaded Panama, removing dictator Manuel Noriega from power. Some members of the 914th had participated in the invasion, called Operation Just Cause. Noriega was brought to the U.S. where he was tried and convicted of drug trafficking, racketeering, and money laundering. WIVB-TV reporter Rich Newberg and photographer Paul Woodson accompanied the 914th on the mission and produced a four part series for the station. Mr. Newberg retired from the Buffalo CBS network affiliate at the end of 2015, after serving the station for thirty-seven years in various roles including main anchor, reporter and documentarian. She was granted an honorary doctorate before speaking to the graduating class. Thousands of people attended the graduation ceremonies conducted at the Niagara Falls Convention and Civic Center. In this WIVB-TV piece by reporter Emil Jablonski, Mother Teresa says, "The poor are a gift of God to us. They are great people. They are really lovable people." She said no one should ever feel unwanted. At a news conference she decried the fact that there are children dying of hunger while superpowers pour money into the arms race. She also spoke out against abortion. In a surprise introduction, Mother Teresa met Elizabeth Collins, a child adopted from her Calcutta mission. Elizabeth, now living in Tonawanda, got a warm embrace and told Mother Teresa she loved her. Her wish was that the founder of Missionaries of Charity could live forever. Thirty four years after her visit to Niagara University, Mother Teresa was canonized by the Catholic Church. On September 4, 2016, nineteen years after her death, she became known as Saint Teresa of Calcutta. Throughout his life, he has been known to the people of his community as Brother Bell. This nickname goes to the heart of Bell's philosophy and attitude toward God and his fellow man. "Brother Bell" has contributed to the Western New York Community as an activist, entrepreneur, public servant, author, business advisor, mentor, and as member of the Lutheran Church of Our Savior. Bell started two business ventures in Buffalo, having successfully owned and operated both a dry-cleaning service and a sporting goods store. He built upon his entrepreneurship savvy and used this knowledge to contribute to economic growth within the community and beyond. He has served as a Senior Advisor of the Small Business Development Center at Buffalo State College, as Director of the Buffalo Economic Renaissance Corporation, and in various capacities as a business mentor. In 1998, as a representative of the Mayor of Buffalo, Bell led a delegation of 55 people to Lille, France to personally represent five Buffalo businesses in international trade. For over a decade, and what many may know him for, Bell served as a Council Member-at-Large. His service extends even beyond this position. He founded the Buffalo African American Museum, a traveling and growing exhibit showcasing local African American history. As a community activist, he provides leadership in stewarding the preservation of the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. To this end, he spearheaded the construction of the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Bust in MLK Park with the Buffalo Olmsted Parks Conservancy. Bell has also assisted as chairman of the MLK Trust Fund's Celebration Committee for over 30 years. In February of 2021, he helped to create a collaborative exhibit and video series between the Buffalo Olmsted Parks Conservancy and the Buffalo African American Museum titled "Making of a Monument". This project chronicles the legacy of the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Bust. Brother Bell is an engaged member of his church, the Lutheran Church of Our Savior. He has served in numerous capacities at the church since 1955, including congregation president, Deacon Board chairman, and Evangelism Committee chairman. He is also a poet, publishing a book of poetry titled "A Full Life", which draws inspiration from his relationship with faith, family, and life. Among his numerous awards and distinctions are the NAACP's Medgar Evers Award, the Martin Luther King, Jr. Seniors Award by the New York State Governor, Buffalo Urban League's Evans-Young Award, and recognition by the Erie County Legislature, New York Senate, New York State Assembly, U.S. Congress, and the Buffalo and Erie County Library for his years of public service. Of particular note, Brother Bell was recognized for the Congressional Record by the Honorable Brian Higgins on January 15, 2020. The Congressman said: "Brother Bell has lived a life of love, representing the best of our community and our country. We, as a nation, can learn from his example." Bell is also recognized as an Uncrowned King as part of the Uncrowned Community Builders. Clifford Bell has received the highly honored title of Paramount Chief of the African World, performing libation ceremonies in English, French, and Spanish. In 2021, Bell was honored by the Buffalo History Museum with the coveted Red Jacket Award. The Red Jacket Award is given annually "in recognition of quiet, continued, unbroken devotion to civic progress." In 1792, President George Washington presented Red Jacket with the medal after which the Museum's award is modeled. Brother Bell has been married to Helaine Tucker for over 66 years and they have two children, three grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. Bell believes in fairness and equity for all people, bringing his passion for civil rights to any challenge he has faced over the years. He continues to serve as an engaged community member treating all with fairness, living by his motto "This Bell tolls for the People".
