What does your square represent? The square represents a bit of who we are. At the center Abigail + Eleanor our West Highland West Terriers, are sitting in between Mark's golf + my books. At the bottom, the tree branches have the flags from our family trees. English, Dutch, German, + Italian on my side + Polish, Bulgarian, Croatian for Mark with an American Flag in the heart in the middle.
2. Why did you choose these symbols? As a historian, the books + the coffee are very appropriate for me. The golf stuff is very Mark. The patriotic symbols show our pride + love for our country + community.
3. What do you hope viewers notice or feel? I hope they feel like they are getting to know more about us. The patriotic colors + the symbols are the very service oriented side of us and the books, golf, and dogs are more the behind the scenes version.]]> Poloncarz, Lindsey and Mark]]> 1. The half hour presentation, was written, produced and reported by Marie Rice, who co-anchored the special with WIVB anchor John Beard. It featured some of the most emotional testimony from Love Canal family members whose loved ones were sick and dying due to chemical exposure. More than seven hundred families were demanding that they be relocated and that their grievances be properly addressed.

Tests determined that residents had suffered “ominous” rare chromosomal damage. Lois Gibbs, who ultimately led the Love Canal Homeowners Association to victory, later attributed Buffalo news coverage to the successful outcome. The grassroots crusade has been credited with launching the environmental justice movement in the United States.

President Jimmy Carter came to Niagara Falls to sign legislation that met homeowners demands and led to the creation of the Superfund. Formerly known as the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act of 1980, the program is designed to provide emergency responses to sites contaminated by hazardous substances. By one count there are 40,000 federal Superfund sites across the United States.]]> Rice, Marie (Producer, Writer, Host)]]> News 4 Buffalo (WIVB-TV Newsroom)]]> Murphy, Kurt (Graphic Artist)]]> Beard, John (Co-host)]]> Swan, Ray (Editor)]]> A Toxic Nightmare: The Awakening [The Story of Love Canal Pt. 1]
