Details of duties, weather, and travels between Buffalo, Washington, D.C., and Aquia Creek, Va. Bulk of diary was written while at Aquia Creek. Entry for 5 Apr. 1863 recalls Abraham Lincoln, Mrs. Lincoln, and their son arriving by boat at Aquia Creek and continuing by train to the front. After 14 May 1863, he is occupied with attempts to reorganize the 21st Regiment. He also was ordered to see Gen. Silas Casey to be examined for a position in the United States colored troops for which he was rejected on 27 August 1863. Chester Sternberg enrolled in the 21st New York Volunteers, 13 May 1861 at Buffalo to serve 2 years. Mustered in as lieutenant, wounded at Bull Run, Va., 30 Aug. 1862, received promotion to lieutenant colonel, 8 Dec. 1862, mustered out at Buffalo, 18 May 1863.
